Creating this website - the story
The first project on the website is the website itself! To read about the technical stuff, please click here
The past
A few months ago, I got the idea to create an online resume and hobby project portfolio. There are social networks and tools out there specifically for one or the other, but not for both. Therefore, I created my own website!
After some research, the first idea was to settle on a Wordpress site, since there are a lot of templates available and it is used widely across the internet. I found a template, registered a domain, added some text and the very first version of steynguelen.nl was done!
However, the website was not yet perfect for me, because of two reasons:
- Wordpress is quite slow and difficult to work with; one mistake can ruin the entire website and for small websites the interface is slow.
- The templates I found where either expensive or did not fit my needs. I wanted a template that is easy on the eyes, still has the information needed but is not too fancy.
Since the project was already up and running, I left it that way.
The present
Fast forward a few weeks and via a co-worker I found the Hugo platform. Hugo is an easy way to create websites; it does not require much coding knowledge and it creates fast websites. Web-development is made easy, the main focus is on adding content and it only requires a few terminal commands to go live.
The next step was to find a good template. My requirements for a good site are a minimalistic, easy on the eyes template that conveys information without too many hassle. It has to work fast on all platforms, since we all use different devices, ranging from mobiles to desktops.
During my search I found the perfect one! Rhazdon created (hello-friend-ng), which perfectly fits my needs. It is simple, fast and minimalistic.
The future
The next step for this website is adding content. I have some electromechanical projects I did in the past, that can be visualized easily on the website.
